What can a technical author do for you?

This is indeed the most frequent of questions I am asked and my answer is this: Technical Authors undertake a broad set of activities that are designed to communicate information which helps people enhance their productivity. I have created content for User Guides, Start Up manuals, Installation Guides and have used a wide variety of tools from Microsoft Word, RoboHelp, FrameMaker and SupportPoint and I've configured a Document Management System to improve the flow of documentation.

I can make sense of complex technical information

My job is to take information from a variety of sources including people and turn that information into a useable document. What I need to make clear is that documents must be aimed at specific audiences. An end user has no interest in what makes the application tick. They want to know how to use the product to achieve results and know they have invested in superb product. However, I also need to know what is important for the user and write the document appropriately.

Writing with consistency clarity and clear vision

We may all speak English but let's be clear not everyone knows how to use words efficiently and effectively. When I write I need to ensure that the document is written with consistency, using consistent data and in plain English. This is particularly relevant when writing a document which uses actual sample data to which users can refer for clarification. I keep each sentence to the point, avoid verbosity and present everything in a logical sequence.
